Natural musk is found in animals, in particular the male musk deer or from a cat with musk civet. Musk is obtained from the musk pod, a preputial gland in a pouch, or sac, under the skin of the abdomen of the male musk deer.
Fresh musk is semiliquid but dries to a grainy powder. It is usually prepared for use in perfumes by making a tincture in ethanol. After standing for several months, this solution imparts character, strength, and tenacity to perfume.
Synthetic Musk
Today this animal raw material is forbidden in perfumery in order to protect animals, So perfumers
use a synthetic musk (white musk) from flowers and molecule compounds. White musk is a replacement to the Deer/Civet Musk.
Abrette seed is known as the best natural Musk substitute.
What does white musk smell like?
Very comfortable soft and clean, woody, animal like and sometimes fruity. There's a wide variety and you can play with this olfactive variation.
